DEADLINE EXTENDED: Excellence in Clinical Teaching Awards
First Published 1/5/2009

John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine
Excellence in Clinical Teaching Awards

Each year, five faculty will be selected for the Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award.  This award recognizes the fundamental concept, exemplified by Sir William Osler, that the development of outstanding physicians occurs primarily in clinical settings (ambulatory or in-patient).  Each recipient of the award will receive $5,000 for support of his or her professional development and/or teaching programs.

The following attributes are used to define excellence in clinical teaching:

1. Demonstrates patient-centered focus of excellent teaching and care;
2. Serves as a role model of care and compassion of learners and patients and exemplifies professional behavior; shows respect for the learner, patient, and other health care providers;
3. Demonstrates enthusiasm and enjoyment;
4. Demonstrates inquisitiveness and values inquiry;
5. Creates an enjoyable, challenging, and “safe” learning environment;
6. Sets high, but obtainable, standards;
7. Assists in the development of clinical skills, including patient history, physical exam, procedures, and clinical reasoning;
8. Integrates basic science with clinical care;
9. Demonstrates patience;
10. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability; is open-minded;
11. Provides useful and relevant feedback;
12. Demonstrates teamwork and multi-disciplinary care;
13. Is genuine.

Nominations can come from students, house staff, faculty and staff and must include a statement no more than 200 words in length describing how the candidate exemplifies excellence in clinical teaching.  (Current Osler Scholars are not eligible.)  Letters of nomination should be addressed to the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine and sent to Ms. Rosemary Lindley, 8.208 Rebecca Sealy Hospital, Route 0162, or electronically as a Word document (to rmlindle@utmb.edu).  The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2009.

Individuals selected will be ineligible for two subsequent years after selection.
• 2008 awardees: Drs. Sandra Hatch, John Luk, William Nealon, Juan Sarria and Roger Soloway
• 2007 awardees: Drs. Michael Boyars, Mukaila Raji and Cindy Wigg

The recipients will be announced in July 2009 during the 8th annual Osler Oration.

***The Osler Club at Temple B’nai Israel***
First Published 1/5/2009

The Osler Club at Temple B’nai Israel

Sir William Osler (1849-1919), a Canadian, graduated from the School of Medicine at McGill University in Montreal in 1872. He served on the faculty of medicine at McGill, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where he was one of the founders of that medical faculty in 1892. Osler moved to the United Kingdom in 1905 where he joined the faculty of medicine at Oxford University and was knighted by King George V.

Osler believed that physicians should have a strong background in science, that physicians should always do what is right and best for individual patients, and that medical care should be delivered humanely. He was recognized as a very astute and empathic physician, a highly effective yet understanding teacher, a passionate bibliophile, and an outstanding humanist. He was a prolific writer having published over 1,000 papers on a wide variety of medical topics and nearly 250 manuscripts in the humanities. William Osler was loved by nearly everyone who ever met him, and at the time of his death in 1919, Osler was thought to be the best known physician in the English speaking world.

The Osler Club at UTMB serves as a forum to study the life and teachings of Sir William Osler, the history of medicine, and the medical humanities. The club is sponsored by the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, an endowed organization on the campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch. The Academy is dedicated to keeping alive and promoting Oslerian ideals in the practice of medicine in the 21st century. Members of the Academy are called Osler Scholars and are all practicing physicians on the faculty at UTMB.

At 6:00 PM on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 the Osler Club will meet at Temple B’nai Israel. The presentation will be given by Megan Cole, a highly accomplished and acclaimed actress, who will give a lecture/performance that will explore connections between medicine and literature. Ms. Cole will combine some of William Osler’s famous aphorisms with readings from poetry, plays, and short stories. The focus of Ms. Cole’s presentation will be how medicine and art can be illuminated by cross-reference.  The public is invited to this meeting of the Osler Club.

Please note there is no fee to attend the performance by Ms. Cole. Wine and cheese will be served at the conclusion of her performance. Since food is being served, please make reservations by calling Ms. Rosemary Lindley at 747-9681. Ms Lindley is the Program Manager of the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine.

2008 Year End and 2009 Information
First Published 12/29/2008

In January, a few changes to the Federal payroll tax withholding laws go into effect.  For your convenience, UTMB has outlined the revisions below.  This is a good time to carefully review your pay stub, make any necessary revisions to your withholding status, and ensure that your home address on file at UTMB is accurate.

The withholding tables for Federal Income Tax in 2009 have changed.  This means employees may see a change in their tax withholding.  Your taxable income may also change if you received a salary increase, changed your contribution to a supplemental retirement plan.

Electronic W-2s available again for 2008

Click here for information on the E W-2 process.

Three years ago, UTMB began offering current employees the option of receiving their annual federal “W-2” forms electronically; more than 8,000 individuals have signed up for the service.  The speed and efficiency of the electronic W-2s allows those that opt for electronic delivery to securely receive their electronic W-2 earlier than they would receive the W-2 on paper.   If you are an employee who has already registered for an eW-2, you DO NOT need to re-register; watch for news in January about your form’s availability.  If you didn’t register for 2008 but want to try eW-2 this year, you can sign up at the eW-2 web site.  If you are not registered and do nothing, you’ll receive your W-2 on paper via the United States Post Office postmarked no later than February 2, 2009.  Employees that are no longer employed with UTMB, at the time of W-2 distribution, will receive their W-2 by US mail at the home address.  Please ensure that your home mailing address is correct with UTMB.  The address can be updated online through employee self service.

If you haven’t signed up for Electronic W-2 your W-2 form will be postmarked
no later than February 2, 2009,  per IRS Regulations.

Employees that are no longer employed with UTMB, at the time of W-2 distribution,
will receive their W-2 by US mail at the home address.
