Construction Update
After more than five years of careful planning, design and construction, the GNL is complete – finished on time and on budget.
This state-of-the-art facility supports an extraordinary team of scientists engaged in a vital effort to better understand – and mitigate – the threat of emerging infectious diseases.
The GNL achieved "substantial completion" in early August 2008. In mid-September 2008, Hurricane Ike dealt a devastating blow to Galveston Island but the GNL stood strong, weathering the storm precisely as designed.
The facility was formally dedicated on November 11, 2008. Finishing touches and final checks within the facility proceeded throughout 2009. In 2010, it is anticipated that the laboratories in the facility will begin full scale research activities.
